Do you have a Safe Space?

Within our hierarchy of needs (Maslow), safety/security are held in our sacral chakra, just above our root and physiological needs of food, shelter, water, air, etc.

So what does safety or security mean for you?

Is it a locked house at night? Is it a well-paying job? Is it an înjećtion against a global p@ndėmic? Is it a cup of tea before bed? Or an unshakable morning routine?

It could be all of the above, or far from any of these - safety + security is different for everyone. The common thread underneath it all: peace of mind.

So where do you go when things get turbulent or unstable? Of course nature is a top tier resource, but it’s also important to have a safe space nearby when you need it. So where is the space where you can sit down and feel your nervous system sigh in a slight bit of comfort or ease? It could be in your room, your house, or even your car. Is it a certain type of music that makes you feel calm? Is it certain nostalgic scents that remind you of your grandmother? Where can you go when the head (and the spleen) are filled with worry, obsessive thinking, or anxiety? How can you refocus to balance the sacral chakra?

Aside from waterfalls and my altar (which provide grounding in other ways), I created this space under one of the biggest palm trees I've ever seen, where the moon rises just behind it. When I need to breathe deeper, I get outside, here on my lower patio, enveloped in green leaves and blanketed by stars. This space has held me in tears, in joy + in laughter. It's held me in plant ceremonies, in sunbathing, and most of all, when I need fresh air and expansion to zoom out to see the big picture again. I have specific incense which remind me of the dedication to prayer in Bali, crystals and rocks from different lands, comfort blankets, and the sound of cicadas (which bring me back to my childhood in Virginia).

Ways to bringing your senses into safety:
• drinking a warming tea
• burning {sustainably sourced} palo santo
• calmingly nostalgic scents
• weighted blankets
• instrumental music

Create a space, and begin to find the comfort in having that nest when you need it .
